Nursing Students for Choice Clinical Externship Program (CEP)

Please note: The CEP has been reopened, as of January 1, 2017! If you’re interested, please contact sarah@nssrh.org.

At Nursing Students for Sexual & Reproductive Health (NSSRH), we believe that all nursing students (RN, ADN, BSN, MSN, DNP, and PhD) should have clinical exposure to abortion and reproductive health care in order to be well prepared to enter the workforce and serve the full spectrum of patient needs.  NSSRH has partnered with Planned Parenthood Federation of America and various other reproductive health care providers to create clinical experience opportunities in most major cities in the U.S. Funding may available to offset travel costs to and from the clinical site. Please see the guidelines below for more details and to apply!

A Brief Overview

Nursing students at any level are welcome to apply. Students will be exposed to the nursing role in pregnancy options counseling, abortion care, family planning, basic gynecology, and some basic primary care depending on the facility.

In addition to completing the application on our website, all applicants must submit a current Letter of Good Standing (send as a PDF on official letterhead to clinical@nssrh.org) from their nursing school in order to qualify for this program. All applicants must complete a background check, and will be entered into a background check system by NSSRH as part of the application process, as well as agree to the terms and conditions of the CEP Guidelines.

After successfully completing the application process, students will be put in touch with the Clinic Manager at their assigned site, and details of the schedule and observation opportunities will be developed with the clinic manager on an individual basis.

NSSRH requests a minimum of 30 hours of clinical time, however we are not able to guarantee the time available at any given clinical site. No hands-on training is guaranteed, however students will gain valuable exposure to many aspects of nursing care in reproductive health.

Students will be required to fill out a Pre-Externship Survey and Post-Externship Survey as part of their clinical externship.
